Mattress

Twenty years of tears
and love and
hopeful helpless happiness
and every single thing between
the sheets so soft
and mountain fresh
as dried upon a line
sublime
we lie
together souls undressed
and kiss and chest to chest
pray for blessed
together rest

And dark descends
as daylight ends
the whatever bends
‘neath layered covers mend
and keep us

slides deep twilight
come welcomed sweet reprise
such dreams this life
some tussled pains
cases wear tear’s stain
myriad nightmares slain
a hand reclaims

quiet lay
dawn becomes here

Time ticking
so long too quickly
indented warmly
cracks the morning
light perplexed
arise refresh
to face the next
bodies flex
awake reset retraced
heartbeats race
we brave each day
by day

It is hard to say farewell
to where upon
all we lay bare
It held the everything of us
Each hope
Each fear
Each slumbered trust
Forget not ever
that last first light
